Jalapeno's- A cautionary tale...

As many of us low carbers know, Jalapeno Poppers are a wonderful snack. I have made about 4 large batches of Jalapeno Poppers in the past 2 months, as they have been requested at pot luck-type events.

I was invited over to DBF's brothers house to play poker with a bunch of people. Seeing as I haven't done anything social in months, I was very excited for this. DBF's brother roasted me an entire pork shoulder and in return, I would make 2 batches of Jalapeno Poppers to take for the poker game.

I sat in my dining room cutting and taking seeds out, stuffing and wrapping them with bacon, when all of a sudden, my hands feel like they're on FIRE. (Yes people, I know that they recommend you wear gloves, but I didn't have any and it never bothered me before). I continued until I got all of the poppers on the baking sheets and then ran and put my hands in ice water. This was at 6:00pm.

After 15 minutes of no relief, I had DBF look up on the internet what could remedy this excrutiating burning feeling. I proceeded to try each and every one of the remedies I could find:
  1. Lemon juice
  2. Milk (I didn't have milk, so I used heavy whipping cream)
  3. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  4. Vinegar
  5. Bleach water solution
  6. Baking soda mixed with water for a paste
  7. Baking soda water
  8. Baking soda directly on skin
  9. Yogurt (It was yocheese, but same difference)
None of these helped a bit. The feeling wasn't just burning, it was pain, and my hands were bright red. I took 2 Advil and then felt a tiny bit better, so around 10pm, DBF and I went to his bro's house for poker. I was there for all of 15 minutes and had to go back home and put my hands in ice again. I called my physican's office and had the Dr. on call paged, and she said she didn't know what to do other than take some Benadryl, more Advil, and ice them, and if they weren't better in 40 minutes, to go to the emergency room! Luckily, the Benadryl knocked me out and I fell asleep with my hands on ice and the pain gradually got better as the night went on and this morning I just have a little soreness in my hands.

So the moral of my story is : If you make anything with hot peppers, WEAR GLOVES! It could save you from looking like a complete idiot like I did at the poker game, and possibly a trip to the ER.
