24 Hours in Lucca

I really enjoyed our short stint in Lucca, it is a gorgeous town and a great base to explore surrounding areas. If we had more time I would have loved to stay longer and explore a bit more of this part of Tuscany. One of the reasons was because we stayed in one of the best Air BnB’s, if you are visiting Lucca and have a car then you must stay here. The Airbnb was really nice, but the host was amazing. She had traditional Lucian cake waiting for us along with water, beer and a lovely local bottle of wine. They also have bikes so you can cycle into the city, which takes less than 5 minutes. Check out the Airbnb here.

Once we had finished off the cake we headed into the town to explore. Lucca is a beautiful town to just wander through gelato in hand. Notable landmarks to check out is Guinigi tower, climb the 232 steps to the top to get a bird’s eye view of the city, it’s a random tower as it has trees growing at the top. Like any good Italian city, it has multiple impressive churches that are always cool to check out. If anyone does ornate churches well it’s the Italians. One of the things I really enjoyed was walking along the top of the ancient city walls. Lucca has transformed the old town walls into a beautiful public space with bike tracks, walkways and even a few restaurants and cafes. You can even go inside the walls at certain points, which is pretty cool.

Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is the main piazza in the city and if you are a Top Gear fan you might remember the episode they are in Lucca and are parked this particular square. We actually had dinner in one of the restaurants in the square that our host recommended. It sounds like a tourist trap but OMG was it amazing. Such good service and the food was delicious. Highly recommend L’Angolo Tondo and you can people-watch while sitting outside.

For good gelato check out Gelateria De’ Coltelli right beside Chiesa di San Michele in Foro, which is a big church.

Our hosts, who are locals also recommended some other Restaurants which I will just leave a list off here incase you want to check them out:

  • In Pasta-Cibo e Convivio
  • Trattoria da Leo
  • Trattoria Da Ubaldo
  • Trattoria da Giulio

  • Pizzeria da Felice
  • Pizzeria Santa Maria

  • La Crema Matta Gelateria
